Bentancur lost consciousness during the match, which led to a rapid intervention by doctors who rushed to the field to assist him. The official broadcast chose not to show the alarming scenes that unfolded in the stadium, as play was halted for several minutes until Bentancur was carried off on a stretcher, making way for Brennan Johnson.
Social media quickly went up in flames with a video showing the midfielder being supported by a teammate, with his jaw dislocated, highlighting the seriousness of the injury. “Bentancur has been carried off on a stretcher, and we are forced to make a premature replacement. Over time, a club spokesperson said the midfielder “was immediately transferred to a nearby hospital for further examinations.” They reassured fans that the former Boca player was in good condition and out of danger. “We can confirm that Rodrigo is conscious, able to speak, and will be taken to hospital for further checks,” read a brief statement on the English club’s official X account.
After the incident, the match resumed normally, but the atmosphere remained charged with tension.
