This is an unusual world record broken by the Hershey Bears last Sunday in Pennsylvania (United States). During the American ice hockey team’s game against the Providence Bruins, spectators were invited to throw stuffed animals for the Bears’ first goal. A tradition that allows the NHL minor league club to participate in charitable work.

And we can say that the public played along since no less than 102,343 teddy bears were thrown onto the Giant Center ice rink during Mike Sgarbossa’s goal, according to a Hershey Bears press release. The previous record dating from last year, with 74,599 units, has therefore been largely beaten.

45 minutes to evacuate everything!

With 10,514 people in the audience, an average of almost ten stuffed animals per spectator was established. The players had fun with the teddy bears, throwing themselves into the pyramids of cuddly toys, before helping to reunite them. It took forty-five minutes to evacuate the lint and allow the game to resume!

“The collected stuffed animals will now be donated to more than 35 local charities as part of the club’s Hershey Bears Cares program,” says the hockey team. In total, 566,450 teddy bears have been collected since the creation of the operation in 2001.
