During a press conference this Tuesday, January 7 in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, President-elect Donald Trump sent an unequivocal message to Hamas. He threatened serious consequences if Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip are not released before his inauguration scheduled for January 20.
A clear threat to Hamas
Donald Trump said that “all hell will break loose in the Middle East” if no progress is made in the hostage file. “It won’t be good for Hamas. It really won’t be good for anyone,” he warned.
The president-elect also expressed impatience with the lack of significant progress, reinforcing his desire to impose change upon taking office.
Cautious optimism from his special envoy
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, expressed hope for progress before the inauguration. “I really hope that by then we will have good news regarding the Israeli hostages,” he said.
Technical negotiations under Qatari mediation
Meanwhile, negotiations for a truce in Gaza and the release of hostages continue. Qatar, acting as mediator, indicated that discussions remain at one level « technique »without the participation of high-level delegations.
Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified that the technical meetings focus on “many delicate subjects” but refrained from revealing more to preserve the confidentiality of the negotiations.
A persistent crisis since October 2023
The situation remains tense since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023which marked the start of the current conflict. The last round of negotiations, held in December, was unsuccessful, with each side accusing the other of blocking discussions.
However, Qatar mentioned a “new momentum” in negotiations after Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections. The combined efforts of the United States, Qatar and Egypt aim to achieve a ceasefire and the release of the hostages.
Donald Trump, while exerting intense pressure for the release of Israeli hostages, ignores the tens of thousands of Palestinian women and children killed during the Israeli army’s offensives in Gaza.
