The suspect found dead in the Tesla Cybertruck in Las Vegas last Wednesday used ChatGPT to plan the explosion of the vehicle, Las Vegas police said Tuesday, confirming information from the Associated Press.
Only the driver of the pickup was killed in the incident. A forensic pathologist determined that the individual had been shot in the head before the explosion, suggesting suicide. The driver was later identified as a 37-year-old US Special Forces soldier. According to the FBI, the man was likely suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
ChatGPT answered questions
His research on ChatGPT, a chatbot powered by generative artificial intelligence, focused on the speed of movement of an ammunition charge, explosive targets, and the legal status of fireworks in the state from Arizona.
“To my knowledge, this is the first incident on American soil in which ChatGPT has been used to help an individual build such a device. This is a worrying time.”
Las Vegas Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill
What does OpenAI respond to?
OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, responded by saying it was committed to ensuring its tools were used “responsibly” and were designed to reject malicious instructions.
“In this case, ChatGPT responded with information that was already publicly available on the Internet and provided warnings against malicious or illegal activity,” the company said in a statement. (jah/ats)
