The Japanese manufacturer Toyota has just unveiled a new addition to its range of all-terrain vehicles: the Hilux Rangga SUV. This model, which unfortunately will not be marketed in France, represents a particularly interesting alternative for authentic 4×4 enthusiasts looking for a robust and accessible vehicle.
A proven basis for an adventurer SUV
Based on the chassis of Hilux Champan economical pickup originally designed for emerging markets, the Rangga SUV retains the rugged DNA of its utility cousin. The transformation was carried out by New Armadaan Indonesian bodybuilder, with the official endorsement of Toyota.
A pragmatic and functional design
The front of the vehicle remains faithful to the Hilux Champ with its matte black plastic grille and robust optics. The metamorphosis takes place from the B pillar, where the cargo bed is replaced by a closed passenger compartment that can accommodate up to seven passengers. The straight lines and cubic silhouette affirm the utilitarian character of the vehicle.
A spacious and versatile interior
With its three rows of seats, the Rangga SUV offers a generous interior. The finish, although simple, uses materials that imitate leather, while all seats benefit from a reclining function. The technological equipment remains basic, with a small central screen and a half-analog, half-digital instrument cluster.
Engines suitable for intensive use
Under the hood, two engines are offered: a 2.0 gasoline unit of 139 ch developing 183 Nm of torque, and a 2.4 turbo diesel of 150 ch with 343 Nm. Both engines are associated with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The call price is equivalent to approximately 24 000 euros makes it a particularly attractive proposition in its market.
This SUV version of the Hilux perfectly illustrates Toyota’s ability to develop vehicles adapted to the specific needs of each market. Even if we will not see this model on our French roads (where the Land Cruiser remains the spearhead of Toyota 4x4s), it represents an interesting approach to the authentic SUV at a controlled price.
(A small regret: this type of simple and efficient vehicle is sorely lacking in our market, where SUVs are becoming more and more sophisticated and expensive)
