In an emotional announcement on Tuesday, Paolo Guerrero, Peru’s celebrated striker and all-time top scorer, revealed his retirement from international football at the age of 41. The former Bundesliga star, who shone through his exploits with clubs such as Bayern Munich, Hamburg and Corinthians, decided it was time to pave the way for a new generation of talent.

Guerrero, who made his illustrious debut for the national team against Bolivia in October 2004, has amassed an impressive total of 125 caps, scoring 40 goals for his country — a record that is testament to his incredible talent and dedication on the ground. “The national team needs new talents, fresh faces. The fans are demanding new players, and it is right to give young people a chance,” Guerrero said firmly while reflecting on his decision.

His last match in the red and white colors came in a tough World Cup qualifying round, where Peru faced Argentina and suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat last November. It was a bittersweet conclusion to an inspiring international career, during which Guerrero also represented his country at six Copa America tournaments and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

As he continues to play at club level with Alianza Lima in his native country, Guerrero’s legacy will no doubt inspire future generations of Peruvian footballers.
