– The government in favor of the solidarity tax on plane tickets.

Will the French pay more for their plane tickets in 2025, and more generally in the months to come? Nothing is less certain, even if the increase was announced on January 1, 2025 because of the solidarity tax on plane tickets (TSBA) wanted by the previous government for environmental and budgetary reasons. Moreover, companies like Air had decided to pass on this future tax on tickets sold from the end of the year, between 2 euros and 120 euros additional cost depending on the class chosen. The French company justified itself by the possibility of a deficit in the event of adoption of the law.

Except that the law never passed since the Barnier government was censored. Will this solidarity tax be introduced one day? The new Minister of Public Accounts took a position on the subject on January 5 in The Parisian. Amélie de Montchalin confirms that she is for its maintenance : “I am in favor of it. It is a measure of fiscal and ecological justice.she indicates before recalling that “the 20% of the population with the highest income are responsible for more than half of the spending on air travel”.

A hard blow for French companies?

If the TSBA were to be ratified in the future budget, it would be a new blow to the wallets of the French, particularly those traveling more than 5,500 kilometers of France since the scale plans to increase from 7.51 euros to 40 euros (in Economy and Premium) and from 63.07 euros to 120 euros (Business and La Première). An announcement which caused an outcry in the airline sector and which should reignite anger, as explained The Parisian.

A sector executive is not kind to the government: “The risk is that only the rich will be able to buy tickets tomorrow. Who can believe that it is thanks to this that we will reduce the country’s deficit? For their part, those behind the measure argue that the increase, even of 120 euros for the most expensive tickets, is minimal given the basic price of the plane ticket.

“It is no longer acceptable”, the increase in the tax on plane tickets is already creating a stir

But in the airline sector, we are worried in the long term repercussions : “Companies will prefer to take off from other European airports to keep prices low”warns one of the leaders to the Parisian. One of his colleagues insists that “aviation needs to invest to succeed in its decarbonization” and not “sticks in the wheels”. Ryanair has, for example, already threatened to reduce its routes by half if the measure is passed.
