Life was again more expensive in Switzerland last year compared to 2023. In fact, the average annual increase in prices rose to 1.1%, according to the Federal Statistical Office on Tuesday. This increase is, however, less strong than the two previous years. It had been 2.1% in 2023 and 2.8% in 2022.
This increase in prices is explained in particular by the increase in housing and energy prices (+3.4%). Restaurants and hotels were also 2.1% more expensive, as were mountain railways and ski lifts (+3.3%), international package tours (+3.8%) and parahotel industry (+4.5%).
On the food side, there was a sharp increase in chocolate (+9.1%), coffee (2%) and lamb (+1.8%). Tobacco products also increased more than average (+1.8%)
On the other hand, the prices of medicines (-2.8%), diesel (-5.4%), rental of personal vehicles (-16.6%) or used cars (-3.6% ) have decreased. Even air transport (-4.6%) and regional public transport (-2.9%) declined, as did the clothing and footwear sector (-1.4%).
On the food side, we also note significant declines for root vegetables and cabbage vegetables (-17%) or even classic vegetables and mushrooms (-9.2%). The prices of pasta, cheese, salads and bread have also fallen slightly.
Note that employees covered by collective labor agreements received a little more salary in 2024 with an average increase of 2.1% in effective salaries.
