The American envoy announces the start of the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Naqoura, in the far south of Lebanon
US envoy Amos Hochstein announced that Israeli forces began their withdrawal on Monday from the border town of Naqoura in Lebanon’s far south, more than a month after the ceasefire between the Israeli army and Hezbollah. UN peacekeepers and the Lebanese Prime Minister had, at the end of last month, asked the Israeli army to accelerate its withdrawal from southern Lebanon. “The Israeli army began its withdrawal from Naqoura… and returned to Israel, south of the Blue Line, today,” Hochstein told reporters, referring to the UN-demarcated border between both countries. “These withdrawals will continue until all Israeli forces completely leave Lebanon, and while the Lebanese army continues to deploy southward to the Blue Line,” Hochstein added after his meeting with the President of Parliament, Nabih Berri, an ally of the Hezbollah movement. Naqoura is the headquarters of the blue helmets of the UN peacekeeping force (UNIFIL).
