Mired in internal and international crises and terrified of popular uprising, Khamenei has unprecedentedly ramped up the execution machine. While the number of executions recorded in 2024 stands at 1,001, the first day of 2025 saw 21 hangings.
Ten of these executions took place in Qezel-Hessar prison, targeting Mohammad-Hossein Mohammadi-Far, Ammar Ahmadi, Said Kishi, Ali and Hassan Vahdani, Shahram Mahdavi, as well as three prisoners named Pasha, Amine and Arshia, and one another unidentified detainee. The same day, Mohammad Shafi Moussavi in Malayer, Shahrokh Sabahpour, Ramzi Beigsavar, Hedayat Ghasemi and two others in Bandar Abbas, Pejman Massoudi in Yassoudj, Ali Moradi in Sepidar Ahwaz, Behrouz Mehrani in Gorgan, Meyssam Farhadi and Reza Bakhtiari at the prison of Dieselabad Kermanchah were also executed.
The barbaric executions continued in the following days, with at least 10 cases reported between January 2 and 6. Monday January 6, Ali Saadi in Ahwaz; on January 5, Khalil Alizahi, Mohammad-Reza Hossein-Zadeh, Amir Mohammad Farahani and Sajad Arzandeh in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz; on January 4, Valiollah Kamalpour in Semnan and Abolfazl Azadi in Hamedan; and on January 2, Mostafa Shakeri and Khosro Khodadadi in Zandjan.
Thus, in these first days of January, 31 prisoners were executed. Since Massoud Pezeshkian came to power, at least 725 prisoners have been hanged.
