Robbie Keane has been named the new coach of Hungarian side Ferencvaros.

The former striker has secured his third coaching job after a playing career which saw him become a legend for both Ireland and Tottenham Hotspur.

Keane’s first foray into management came in 2018, when he took on the role of player-manager at Indian club ATK FC, before joining Maccabi Tel Aviv five years later.

He won the Israeli Premier League title in his only season at the club before leaving last June.

Ferencvaros announced on Monday that Keane was officially taking over as team manager.

“The new coach arrived in Budapest on Sunday afternoon and will head on Tuesday to join our team for the pre-season training camp in Spain,” they said.

Ferencvaros’ squad includes midfielder Naby Keita, who joined the club on loan from Werder Bremen.

The 29-year-old established himself at RB Leipzig before moving to Liverpool in 2018, activating a £48million release clause.

During his time at Anfield, Keita won the Premier League and Champions League as well as several other accolades.

However, injury problems hampered his ability to maintain a starting spot, making 129 appearances in five seasons.

Keane returns to the bench after seven months at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

He will now manage former Liverpool midfielder Keita, who arrives on loan from Werder Bremen.

Keita was disciplined in April and left out of the first team after using social media to deny claims he returned home following an omission from the squad.

He has not played for the club since, but it appears he will return to the pitch with Ferencvaros under Keane.
