The information was confirmed this Monday, January 6, at 10:15 a.m., by -.
Mr. Trudeau will remain in office until his successor at the head of the Liberal caucus is chosen.
This decision takes place ahead of an extraordinary national meeting of the Liberal caucus which is scheduled for Wednesday, January 8.
The current Prime Minister was going through a difficult period within his party itself. Several MPs have left the Liberal caucus in recent months, including Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who could be one of the candidates to replace Mr. Trudeau.
The Conservative Party of Canada had announced that it wanted to table a motion of censure as soon as parliamentary work resumed on Tuesday, January 7. The Bloc Québécois and the New Democratic Party plan to support it.
Three mandates
Justin Trudeau has been the Prime Minister of Canada since November 4, 2015, a little over 9 years. First elected as a deputy for the Papineau constituency in 2008, he then became the leader of the PLC in 2013.
-His party won the 2015 federal election with a majority of 184 seats against outgoing Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper. This was an increase of 150 constituencies obtained for the Liberal party compared to the 2011 elections.
The Liberals then won the 2019 and 2021 elections, but in a minority.
