The territory of Ukraine is shrinking, eaten away by Vladimir Putin’s army.
Last year, Russia seized some 3,600 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine, the military blog Militarnyi reported on Sunday. For comparison, this represents almost the area of the province of Liège.
Militarnyi estimated the losses of territory on the Ukrainian side based on the map of the DeepState project, close to the Ukrainian army, which shows 3,600 square kilometers lost last year.
November was the worst month, according to the blog, with a loss of territory reaching 610 square kilometers, or an average of 20 square kilometers per day. In December, Ukraine would have lost another 510 square kilometers.
However, these figures have not been officially confirmed. In mid-December, the Ukrainian Telegram channel UA War Infographics estimated the loss of territory at some 2,800 square kilometers. It is interesting to observe that Ukraine’s loss of territory increased after the summer offensive launched by kyiv and its conquests in the Russian region of Kursk.
Since the New Year, Russian troops have continued to advance. Over the past 24 hours, for example, they have reportedly captured territory near Kurakhove, near the strategically important town of Pokrovsk as well as in the town of Toretsk. Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion since February 2022.
