The controversy grew around Vinicius Junior after his expulsion during the match between Real Madrid and Valencia (2-1). At the heart of the controversy: a gesture described as an attack against goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski, which could cost the Brazilian player dearly. According to article 104 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, such an offense can be punished with a suspension of between four and twelve matches, a possibility which worries the Madrid club.
Up to twelve match suspension?
The incident took place in the 79th minute, when the ball was not in play. Dimitrievski, after challenging Vinicius, allegedly provoked the latter with a gesture perceived as pulling his hair. Reacting impulsively, Vinicius delivered a blow to his opponent’s face, leading referee Soto Grado to review the action using VAR before issuing him a straight red card. The referee then recorded in his report that the gesture was “deliberate” and executed “with significant force”. If the act is officially considered an assault, the minimum sanction would be four matches, thus excluding the player from the semi-finals and a possible final of the Spanish Super Cup. An extended suspension of twelve matches, although unlikely, remains theoretically possible.
However, extenuating circumstances could work in the player’s favor. Vinicius issued a public apology on his social media, and Dimitrievski’s prior provocation could also be taken into account. Real Madrid, determined to reduce the sanction, have already announced their intention to appeal. The absence of Vinicius would be a blow for Carlo Ancelotti, as the stakes mount for the Whites in domestic competitions. The wait is therefore great to know the final decision of the Competition Committee.
