Suspense in the House of Representatives

Suspense in the House of Representatives

The 118th Congress officially ended at 11 a.m. this Friday morning. The 119th will not begin until a new Speaker of the House of Representatives is elected. Voting for this role is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. The question is whether Mike Johnson, the Republican candidate, will obtain a majority of the votes cast. If all 219 Republicans and 215 Democrats present vote, Johnson will need 218 votes.

However, he has already lost one, in this case that of the Republican representative of Kentucky Thomas Massie. The latter told reporters this Friday morning that he believed that at least one or two other of his colleagues will oppose Johnson’s election. Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy could be one of them.

In the meantime, Johnson indicated that he did not intend to follow the example of Kevin McCarthy, who had negotiated agreements with the most radical members of the Republican group to ensure his election in January 2023. Election which had not not prevented from being fired less than a year later because of one of his concessions.

Remember that Johnson enjoys the support of Donald Trump. This could allow him to be elected in the first round. But is Trump’s influence as great as he thinks with elected Republicans in the House?
