PHIL TAYLOR’S stunning score of 240 has resurfaced on social media… 31 years after it happened.
The 16-time world champion is widely regarded as the sport’s greatest player, achieving records such as 11 televised nine darts and a total of 85 major titles.
Yet one of his lesser-known feats came in 1993 when he hit 240 with just three darts.
Regular scoring dictates that the highest score a player can achieve in a single visit is 180, or three triple 20s.
However, during the 1993 British Matchplay at Chesterfield, a special “Quadro” table was introduced.
The difference was that an extra ring was located between the target and the triple ring, which allowed players to score quadruples.
This meant Taylor and his opponent Jockey Wilson could reach 240 with three quadruple 20s – something the darts icon achieved with expert precision.
The commentator was impressed when the announcer shouted “240” and the crowd applauded in amazement.
The “Quadro” board was discontinued in 2000 and did not return to a professional event.
