A hostage taking is underway this Friday, January 3, 2025 within the Central House of Arles, RTL has learned. According to our information, five people were retained at the level of the care unit of the penitentiary establishment: one prison staff and four medical staff. The hostage-taking began late in the morning. Shortly before 3 p.m., a doctor among the victims was released.
A priori, the detainee is in possession of a homemade weapon, that is to say a weapon that he made himself. According to prison sources, the prisoner who holds these agents against their will suffers from psychiatric problemsthe terrorist motive would therefore be ruled out. Since the central prisons bring together convicts serving the longest sentences, this prisoner belongs to what the administration commonly describes as a “high profile”. This is a 37-year-old man convicted of rape with a weapon.
The prison intervention forces arrived on site, and tried to control the situation, until around 4 p.m. the hostage taker surrendered, thus freeing the detained staff members.
