A Ukrainian court has sentenced a man to 15 years in prison accused of offering help to Russia to locate and bomb fuel warehouses in Ukraine, the Security Service (SBU) in kyiv announced on Thursday. According to this source, the 36-year-old accused had been hiding “for two years” in this region of Chernivtsi (southwest) to escape military mobilization and had exchanged with Russian services.

During a video broadcast live on the internet, he also “set fire to the Ukrainian flag as a sign of loyalty to the Kremlin regime”, again according to the SBU.

“Attempt of high treason”

The man was arrested in June 2024. He was convicted of “attempted high treason” and “justification and denial of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine”, detailed this source.

kyiv has accused hundreds of people of collaborating with Russia since its invasion in February 2022, including people who passed sensitive information to the Russian military. In Ukraine, penalties for such crimes are generally severe, with prison terms ranging from 15 years to life.
