Inter-lane traffic: the pleasant surprise at the start of the year for two-wheel drivers

It was due to end on December 31.

To everyone’s surprise, the experiment with inter-queue traffic for two wheels has just been extended to 21 departments.

New extension of the inter-queue circulation system (CIF). Launched in 2016, the experiment was once again, and to everyone’s surprise, extended by a decree published in Official Journal from December 31, 2024. “There is no reason why the inter-line traffic experiment should be extended,” affirms the text, which sets July 31, 2025 as the new end date. This umpteenth postponement should allow Cerema (Center for studies and expertise on risks, environment, mobility and planning) to obtain additional data to determine the future of this practice.

As a reminder, “inter-lane traffic is characterized by circulation between the lines of vehicles located on the two lanes, having the same direction of traffic, those furthest to the left of a roadway”explains the decree of July 28, 2021. The practice is strictly regulated since it is only authorized on “motorways and dual carriageways separated by a central reservation and with at least two lanes each, where the maximum authorized speed is greater than or equal to 70 km/h”. Furthermore, cars must be stationary or drive very slowly (motorcycles performing the maneuver cannot exceed 50 km/h) and it is prohibited for a vehicle in inter-file to overtake another vehicle in a position similar.

After initial tests from 2016 – with mixed results – the experiment was extended to 21 departments in 2021, where it therefore remains in progress: Bouches-du-Rhône, Haute-Garonne, , ‘Hérault, Isère, -Atlantique, the North, the Rhône (including the metropolis), the , the Alpes-Maritimes, the Drôme, , Pyrénées-Orientales as well as the 8 departments of the Île-de- region (i.e. Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, , Seine-et-, Seine-Saint-Denis , Val-de-Marne, Val-d’Oise, and ). The experiment should make it possible to improve traffic flow and assess the impact on road safety.
