Arnold Origi has firmly cemented his status as a pillar of Kenyan football. Moving from a reliable goalkeeper for Harambee Stars to goalkeeping coach, Origi’s journey is one of growth, determination and passion.

Returning to the national team, he speaks on this unexpected transition into coaching and his hopes for the team as they prepare for the upcoming Mapinduzi Cup.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to be back with the national team – it’s always a privilege,” Origi said enthusiastically. “Having had the honor of representing Harambee Stars as a player, taking on the role of goalkeeping coach gives me a different challenge, which I have come to cherish immensely.

This transition into coaching was not in Origi’s original career plan. Inspired by legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, he hoped for a playing career that would extend into his forties, following the example of his idol’s impressive longevity.

However, after his last competitive appearance with FC Hørd in Norway, the expected offers proved non-existent. “As you get older in the sport, it’s just the nature of the game,” he mused. “Fortunately, I had pursued my UEFA coaching qualifications specifically for goalkeepers. When the opportunity to coach in Östersund came up, I discovered that I really enjoyed the role. This marked the start of my coaching career.

Now reunited with the Harambee Stars, Origi looks forward to collaborating with interim coach Francis Kimanzi, a mentor he deeply respects throughout his career.

“Coach Kimanzi is someone I respect greatly. I played under his leadership, and his football philosophy always inspired me,” Origi commented. “He is a demanding coach, but that is precisely what this team needs to progress. It’s exciting to work with him again in this new role. »

Although the Mapinduzi Cup offers a chance for immediate triumph, Origi remains focused on the overall goal: building a strong team for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is set to host.

“While winning the Mapinduzi Cup would be wonderful, our larger goal is to build a robust team for CHAN,” he said. “Playing in front of our home fans adds pressure, but we have to deliver. The nation has a deep love for football and strives for success. The recent achievement of the U17 girls qualifying for the World Cup illustrates what can be achieved with the right support. I sincerely hope that Kenyans will support us as we strive to create something truly remarkable. »
