The Senegalese government, under the leadership of President Macky Sall, took an important initiative in January 2020 with the promulgation of Law 2020-05 criminalizing rape and pedophilia, with the aim of eradicating these unacceptable practices. This law is supplemented by a free helpline, Allô 116, which allows anyone to report violence or abuse against children.
However, despite these legislative measures and the government’s efforts, cases of rape against minors remain recurring. The minister reiterated that the fight against this scourge requires the mobilization of all actors in society and institutions to protect children and ensure their safety.
