everything you need to know about the digital and tech show in Las Vegas

The Consumer Electronics Show, abbreviated as CES, in Las Vegas is the unmissable event for technology enthusiasts and digital professionals. Every year, in January, this event unveils the innovations that will shape our daily lives, from consumer gadgets to major industrial advances. As we approach the 2025 edition, which will take place from January 6 to 10, it is essential to understand the importance of this show, its rich history and the expected announcements that could redefine the technology landscape.

What is CES, the Consumer Electronics Show?

CES is the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to technological innovation in consumer electronics. Organized annually by the Consumer Technology Associationit is held every early January in Las Vegas, in the United States, and brings together thousands of exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of professional visitors from around the world.

This show is the scene for the presentation of innovative products, ranging from televisions to connected devices, including autonomous vehicles and digital health solutions. It provides a platform for startups and industry giants alike to unveil their latest innovations, establish partnerships and identify the trends that will mark the year to come.

CES, an already rich history

The first edition of CES took place in June 1967 in New York, with 200 exhibitors and 17,500 attendees. At the time, the show primarily featured televisions, tape recorders, and portable radios. From 1978 to 1994, it was held twice a year: in January in Las Vegas for the Winter Consumer Electronics Show and in June in Chicago for the summer version. This summer edition was abandoned in 1998, making Las Vegas the sole and permanent location for the annual CES.

Over the decades, the show has seen many significant innovations presented, such as the VCR (in 1970), the DVD (1996) then the Blu-ray (2004), or even the NES (1985) and the Xbox ( 2001). More recently, advances in virtual reality, artificial intelligence and automotive technologies were also unveiled at CES. In 2025, it continues to play a central role as a barometer of global technology trends, attracting the attention of media, investors and consumers curious to discover the innovations that will shape the future.

What new features are expected at CES 2025?

The 2025 edition of CES plans to be rich in innovations and should result in some major announcements. Of course, AI will be the common thread of the show.

1. Artificial intelligence at the heart of devices

Artificial intelligence is emerging as a pillar of new technologies. Nvidia, with its opening speech given by Jensen Huang, will highlight neural processors (NPUs), now integrated into the latest generation processors from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm.

These chips promise to accelerate usage by enabling complex tasks directly on devices: text generation, image enhancement or even generative AI.

Additionally, Lenovo and Samsung will integrate AI solutions into their new products, such as intelligent assistants capable of operating locally, expected to provide faster and more secure performance.

2. Connectivity: Featured Wi-Fi 7 and HDMI 2.2

Connectivity is taking a leap forward with the expanded adoption of Wi-Fi 7, a standard already found on high-end routers. New devices from Lenovo, Asus and even some consumer products from Samsung and TCL will incorporate this technology, ensuring faster and more stable connections.

On the video side, HDMI 2.2, announced by the HDMI Forum, will appear in televisions, monitors and computers. This standard promises expanded support for resolutions and display frequencies, enough to appeal to gamers and video creators using ultra-high definition content.

3. Hardware optimized for creation and performance

Industry giants like Nvidia, AMD and Intel will unveil new hardware for laptops and desktops:

  • Nvidia is expected to present GeForce RTX 50 GPUs, integrating advanced technologies for ray tracing and DLSS.
  • AMD could introduce graphics cards accessible to the general public and expand its range of Ryzen 9000 processors with mid-range models.
  • Intel, for its part, could take advantage of the event to announce more affordable processors in its Arrow Lake Core Ultra 200S series, in addition to its high-end range.

Content creators will also appreciate the new professional displays announced, such as OLED and IPS Black monitors from Dell and LG, offering a new increase in image quality for graphic design, photo editing or video.

4. Augmented and virtual reality: towards professional uses

Although big brands like Apple, Meta or Valve are not planning big announcements, smart glasses and augmented reality are attracting attention. TCL and other manufacturers will present prototypes of AR glasses that are lightweight, less intrusive and better suited to everyday use, useful in particular for the training, immersive marketing and remote collaboration sectors.

In the field of virtual reality, innovations should mainly concern headsets dedicated to specific professional uses, such as engineering or simulation.

5. Ultra-fast storage for professionals

Storage needs are evolving and CES 2025 should be marked by notable advances in this area. New USB4 external SSDs promise transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, with models expected from Samsung and Western Digital.

As for internal SSDs, the PCIe 5.0 standard is slowly taking hold with impressive speeds (up to 14,000 MB/s). This technology, offered by Corsair, Kingston and others, is intended for video creation professionals and demanding gamers. However, challenges related to heat management in laptops remain to be resolved.

In addition to these expected new features and announcements, others should also follow in the fields of health or automobiles. And, as usual, many gadgets taking advantage of trending technologies will also be revealed, from January 6 to 10, 2025.
