Like João Neves or Gevoany Quenda in 2024, several young Portuguese players are expected to reach a milestone in the coming months.
The year 2025 probably has some nice surprises in store for us. If, like every year, a good number of talents will experience surprising trajectories, others should continue their well-trodden path to the top. The Trivela.fr editorial team has put together a non-exhaustive list of five Portuguese players who should reach a milestone over the next twelve months.
2025: the year of Rodrigo Mora?
He is probably the most anticipated player on this list. Considered a real phenomenon for several years, the young attacking midfielder of FC Porto, Rodrigo Mora, will be particularly expected during 2025. For good reason, the one who stood out in the past by becoming the youngest player in history to play in the Portuguese second division, is now one of the players who count in the FC Porto first team.
At just 17 years old, the young prodigy has even had his first few feats of arms at the highest level in recent weeks. The native of Custóias has indeed scored 2 goals and delivered 3 assists in his last three appearances in Liga Portugal. Enough to announce a particularly promising year 2025, under the colors of its training club.
André Gomes, the return to grace
André Gomes could well establish himself as one of the next “Made in Seixal” talents. Hampered by a serious injury which kept him away from the field for many months, the 20-year-old goalkeeper has since returned to competition, and is tending to regain his best level through performances that are always as astonishing as he manages to deliver with the Benfica B team.
Considered as the club’s third goalkeeper, which makes him the indisputable starter in the reserve team, André Gomes could soon have an opportunity to express himself at the highest level, if he were to maintain his current level of performance.
Confirmation for Martim Fernandes?
In a delicate financial context, FC Porto was forced to focus more on its training center. A situation which has led to the emergence of certain prospects, like the very convincing Martim Fernandes. Now installed in the right lane of the Dragões, the 18-year-old player manages to string together brilliant performances, which already make him one of the very best players in the championship in his position.
Already followed by the biggest teams on the planet, the one who has no less than 5 assists in the league since the start of the season has obviously not yet shown everything he is capable of.
The winter turn for Alberto Costa
Like Martim Fernandes, Alberto Costa also represents the future of Portugal at the right-back position. A few months after arriving in the ranks of the first team at Vitoria, the 21-year-old has established himself as a starter within his team, and remains on a very good run, notably with two assists delivered against Farense, during the last day of the championship.
Prowess which is already making the biggest teams in the country salivate: Benfica, Sporting and FC Porto would in fact be ready to invest this winter in this right back, who intends to reach a new level.
The indestructible Gustavo Sa
In recent years, the Famalicão club has established itself as an excellent source of opportunities for young talents. Portuguese U21 international Gustavo Sa is proof of this, as he manages to confirm himself in the club’s ranks.
This season, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder has started almost all of the matches played by Famalicão, and is increasingly establishing himself as a player who counts in Portugal. Like his compatriot Alberto Costa, Gustavo Sa is also the subject of multiple requests which could lead him to take a step forward in the coming months.
