Cambodia recorded a significant increase in arrests related to drug offenses in 2024. According to a report released Wednesday by the Department of Drug Control, 26,033 suspects were arrested, an increase of 30.5%. compared to 19,940 arrests the previous year. Among them, 954 are foreign nationals representing 20 different nationalities.
Drug seizures on the rise
The report also reveals that around five times more drugs were confiscated last year compared to 2023 (14.7 tonnes compared to just 2.97 tonnes in 2023). Unfortunately, the figures do not say whether the increase in seizures is due to better police activity or an increase in traffic. The substances seized primarily include ketamine, crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine tablets, heroin, ecstasy and cocaine.
Reinforced measures under the new government
Since Prime Minister Hun Manet came to power in August 2023, Cambodia has intensified its fight against narcotics. The head of government ordered local and provincial authorities to eradicate the distribution and consumption of drugs in nightclubs and other entertainment venues across the country. He also decreed zero tolerance for civil servants and particularly the police using drugs.
A strict legal framework, but without the death penalty
Although Cambodia does not have the death penalty for drug traffickers, the penalties remain severe. Anyone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit substances risks a life sentence.
