It is not only on the green rectangle that the two Manchester clubs oppose each other. Financially, United and City are two cash-producing machines, but the figures for the 2023-2024 season compiled by Football Benchmark reveal contrasting trajectories. If the two English giants show growth in their operational income, Manchester United with 22.4 million euros net profit and City with 11.6 million euros, their economic performances differ significantly.
Manchester City dominates television revenue (€343.1 million versus €258.2 million) and commercial revenue (€406.5 million versus €352.6 million), while the Red Devils maintain the advantage in ticketing revenue (159 .7 M€ compared to 88 M€). This distribution reflects the distinct strategies adopted by the two clubs: City capitalizing on its recent sporting successes and its commercial attractiveness, United relying on its historic supporter base and its legendary stadium.
Manchester City ends the profitable season unlike United
On the expenditure side, the two clubs saw their costs increase, but in different proportions: they were 47.6 million euros higher from one season to the next for United (for a total of 635.7 million euros), and 17.5 million for City (total of €715.8 million). The payrolls of the two teams amount to 439 million at United and 480.3 M€ on the Citizens side.
This more controlled management of costs by City is reflected in the final results: while the Sky Blues posted a net profit of 85.9 million euros, the Red Devils showed a loss of 131.7 million.
