On January 9, 2018, in reaction to the freedom of speech on sexist and sexual violence that appeared in the wake of the #MeToo movement, the newspaper The World published the column of a collective of one hundred women defending “a freedom to annoy, essential to sexual freedom”. Catherine Deneuve was among the signatories.

Monday, his daughter Chiara Mastroianni, revealed in the columns of Corriere della Sera that this text was the subject of “a big argument” between them.

The 52-year-old actress confided to the Italian daily that, when she learned of the existence of this platform, she was mortified (“volevo morire”, “I wanted to die”).

A text written “by not very well-meaning people”

She believes that her mother “got tricked on this one”: “The text, it seems to me, arrived at the wrong time and it was written with their feet by people who I don’t believe were very well intentioned. »

This platform therefore created strong tensions between the two women. “But we never had arguments that went to the point of no longer speaking to each other,” explains Chiara Mastroianni. “You have to put things in context,” she suggests. I think that the actresses of this generation, of this beauty, have seen and suffered situations where no one asked themselves: is it happening or is it not happening? »

In 2018, a week after the publication of the column in The World and faced with numerous criticisms, Catherine Deneuve apologized to “all victims of heinous acts who may have felt attacked” by this publication. “Nothing in the text claims that harassment is good, otherwise I would not have signed it,” she added.
