The Ministry of the Interior published this Wednesday a worrying assessment of the night of New Year's Eve. Nearly 1,000 vehicles were set on fire across France, while 420 arrests were made, leading to 310 people being placed in police custody.
A significant increase compared to 2023
These figures mark a clear increase compared to the previous year, when 745 vehicles were burned and 380 people arrested during the same evening. The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, expressed his concern by describing this toll as “still too heavy”.
Serious incidents linked to fireworks mortars
The ministry's press release also highlights the increasing use of fireworks, often directed against law enforcement. Among the most serious incidents:
• In Lyon, a two-year-old child was seriously injured in the face by a mortar shot and risks permanent disability.
• In Thonon-les-Bains, an individual was transported in absolute emergency after a similar incident.
The minister condemned these acts, denouncing “a savagery embodied by cowards” who target both property and people.
-A massive mobilization of law enforcement
For this high-tension night, 90,000 police officers and gendarmes were deployed throughout the country. Bruno Retailleau welcomed their commitment and called for coordinated action with the Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, to intensify the fight against impunity.
Violence that targets modest French people
The minister also pointed out the consequences of this violence on the most vulnerable French people, often unable to protect their vehicles in secure parking lots. He reaffirmed the need to restore order and prevent these recurring acts of vandalism during celebrations.
A recurring challenge for the New Year
This urban violence, which became systematic on New Year's Eve, is fueling a national debate on the means to stop this phenomenon. The increase in figures this year highlights the urgency of a firmer and more effective response.
