Back to the past, January between cold and snow

The month of January promises to be full of notable weather events, reminiscent of the harsh and snowy winters of yesteryear.

The scenarios proposed by weather models suggest a significant winter turn, with a possible change in atmospheric regime towards the second half of the month.

Lovers of cold and snow could finally find satisfaction in a winter that, in recent years, seemed almost forgotten.

Stratwarming?

A key element in the evolution of weather report of January could be the sudden stratospheric warming phenomenon, known as SSW (Sudden Stratospheric Warming).

This event occurs when exceptionally high temperatures occur in the stratosphere, often in correspondence with the North Polecausing the polar vortex to weaken or even collapse. The consequences of such an event can be surprising: frigid air trapped in polar regions can slide south, reaching mid-latitudes.

If current projections are confirmed, theItaly could be hit by cold currents coming from the east from the second half of Januarytriggering waves of bad weather accompanied by snow up to low altitude, even in the plain.

Effects on Italy: Center-South on the front line

The regions of South-Central seem to be the first candidates to experience the effects of this possible meteorological upheaval.

Cold currents from the east could bring bad weather intense, with heavy snowfall in flat and coastal areas.

Particular attention must be paid to the Adriatic regions, often the most exposed to such atmospheric configurations. It is not excluded that the Southern Italy can experience episodes of cold exceptional and snow rare, offering spectacular landscapes even in places less accustomed to these conditions.

The combination between low pressure and glacial influxes represents an explosive mixture for thewinter.

Northern Italy and the return of the “cold cushion”

Meanwhile, the Northern Italy could find itself at the center of another phenomenon typical of the harshest winters: the cold cushion.

This forms when frigid air on the ground, trapped by stable atmospheric conditions, precedes the arrival of an Atlantic disturbance.

This dynamic creates the ideal conditions for widespread snowfall in the Po plaininvolving cities like Milan, Turin et Bologna. Forecasts suggest that the last decade of January could see the North grappling with significant snowfall, favored by the interaction between the cold pre-existing and the humidity brought by disturbed fronts.

This combination could offer shows of snow even in areas usually less affected.
