“The house is ravaged but frankly it could have been worse, fortunately they were woken up by the sound of the fire before it spread too much”: this is the observation of a friend present near the rubble. The start of the year is terrible for this couple from Xammes, north of Pont-à-Mousson, but at least they have their friends to support them.
It was around 7 a.m. when they heard a noise at their home, Chemin de Dommartin-la-Chaussée. Thinking that it was raining hard, they did not pay any more attention before the noise became louder: a fire started from the chimney and spread throughout the living room adjoining their bedroom.
The relocated couple
The two unfortunate people manage to get out of the house safe and sound. The firefighters are called. Under the command of Lieutenant Bayette, there were twenty of them at the height of the battle, coming from the barracks of Pont-à-Mousson, Thiaucourt, Pagny-sur-Moselle and Essey-et-Maizerais.

After nearly three hours of struggle, they managed to save part of the house. The living room and the roof, however, were ravaged. The residents were able to be relocated by the mayor of Xammes, Didier Thiéry, who was present at their side during the firefighter operation.
