Wayne Rooney is once again at the center of an off-field scandal.
Wayne Rooney’s prestigious career has always been closely linked to his tumultuous nightlife. However, the Manchester United legend has managed to reinvent himself, currently working as head coach of Plymouth Argyle, a club that plays in the Championship – the second tier of English football. Now, he finds himself back in the spotlight after a video surfaced on social media that sparked speculation about his personal life.
According to various English media, including The Sun et Daily Mailthe footage shows the former footballer entering his apartment in Plymouth, accompanied by an unidentified woman, sparking a wave of comments and theories on platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Nonetheless, Rooney quickly responded to these accusations, calling them false and providing his own version of events.

In a message posted to his Instagram Stories, the coach claimed that the video, filmed last summer, had been deceptively edited. He says the images show a couple who were kind enough to accompany him home and who were there at the same time as his son. “I am aware of a video circulating online. The video shows a man and woman looking around my apartment. The couple kindly took me home and were there along with my son, who was visiting ,” said the former Manchester United star. He also criticized the media for sharing sensationalist images: “It is frustrating that at least one online newspaper has decided to edit the images to make it appear that a woman entered the apartment on her own. This is simply wrong.”
The material, which quickly went viral on social media, shows Rooney opening the door to his apartment while a woman waits outside. Subsequently, the sequence captures visitors exploring the interior, including the living room, kitchen, and bedroom. At one point in the video, a woman asks, “What time does it end?” while a man comments on a cap which apparently belonged to the former striker. In another part of the recording, guests express surprise at seeing the coach’s private bathroom.

In addition to the video, a photograph of Rooney at a bar alongside two women, taken in August, also surfaced. Although this image is unrelated to the apartment video, it further fueled speculation about his behavior off the field.
Rooney’s performance as manager of Plymouth Argyle has also recently come under scrutiny, with the team sitting at the bottom of the Second Division table after a series of poor results, including a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United. This situation led to discontent among some fans who had initially welcomed the former Everton star to the club following his impressive spell at Derby County.

A Plymouth spokesperson confirmed that the images of the flat are not recent and that Rooney spent the night before the Oxford game in a hotel with his team. Meanwhile, a source close to the Rooney family said his wife, Coleen Rooney, was not perturbed upon seeing the video online. Coleen spent her Sunday in the directors’ lounge at Goodison Park, where she watched Everton FC lose 2-0 to Nottingham Forest.
