The year 2024 was rich, cinematographically speaking, and the time to take stock has come. A few days before the New Year, today we invite you to discover which film released in theaters that spectators who left a rating on AlloCiné preferred*.
Without much surprise, since it was already the best French film (of 2024 AND of all time) according to your ratings, it is The Count of Monte Cristo which takes the top spot, all genres and nationalities combined. With an average of 4.5 out of 5, obtained from 25,052, it succeeds the brilliant Spider-Man – Across the Spider-Verse, which took the crown last year with a nice 4.4 .
Adapted from the literary classic by Alexandre Dumas, the film written and directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière tells of the revenge of Edmond Dantès (Pierre Niney) against the men who betrayed him and stole his love.
Released on Friday June 28, after a successful presentation, out of Competition, at the Cannes Film Festival, The Count of Monte Cristo only took a short week to reach the average which is still its to this day, proof of ‘a craze that has never waned, and has even been reflected at the box office.
With 9,346,024 admissions to date, the feature film is the 41st biggest success of all time in French theaters (and the 2nd for the year 2024), at 831 tickets torn from the first Harry Potter. Now available on video, this film “A must see once in your life and maybe even more” according to Sarlé J. (one of the many Internet users rave about it) could well take advantage of the catch-ups at the beginning of 2025 to achieve this.
What are the 4 other favorite films of spectators?
Until the summer, first place was held by the adaptation of another literary classic. And it even came close for Dune – Part Two to retain its throne: Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction film displays the same average as The Count of Monte Cristo, but these are the number of ratings which make it possible to decide between them.
Dune actually has 17,384, compared to 25,052 for The Count of Monte Cristo, which places the latter a little ahead. But we must not minimize the place of the feature film carried by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, which did much better than the 4.2 of the first part.
At the box office too, because the continuation of the messianic journey of Paul Atréides, future leader of the revolt against those who destroyed his family, attracted 4,203,460 spectators, compared to 3,165,270. And it is available on video and on myCANAL , for those who haven’t caught up yet.
The third best film of the year is still in theaters. And it has already attracted more than a million spectators, since it is En fanfare, a dramatic comedy by Emmanuel Courcol with Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Lottin and Sarah Suco, which has an average of 4.3 out of 5.
Also in Cannes, it tells the story of Thibaut, an internationally renowned conductor, who learns that he was adopted and discovers the existence of a brother. Apparently, everything separates them, except the love of music. Detecting his brother’s exceptional musical abilities, he makes it his mission to right the injustice of fate.
As with the duel between The Count of Monte Cristo and Dune, it was the number of notes that made it possible to decide between En fanfare and his pursuers. Including There’s Still Tomorrow (also 4.3, but 3,831 votes against 4,036 for the one ahead of it), Italian drama which, if it did not enjoy the same success as in Italy, where it stood out phenomenon, still attracted 647,262 spectators.
Directed by Paola Cortellesi, in sublime black and white, the feature film takes us to post-World War II Italy. In the city of Rome, torn between the hope born of the Liberation and the material difficulties caused by the conflict which has only just ended.
A period film, feminist and modern in its themes (emancipation and the fight against patriarchy), which appealed as much for its subject as its way of treating it, by injecting a little humor into a story which does not does not lack emotion, however, and revives the tradition of Italian comedy.
And freedom is also a question in the surprising fifth. From its title, since it is Amal – A Free Spirit, Belgian drama by Jawal Rhalib, released on April 17 in our theaters. Where it certainly only attracted 58,859 people, but on a reduced number of copies (108). Which didn’t stop him from pleasing.
Centered on a high school teacher in Brussels, who encourages her students to express themselves freely, Amal tells how her daring teaching methods and her enthusiasm will turn their lives upside down, to the point of shocking some. And make her feel harassed, threatened. Which is reminiscent, to varying degrees, of Pas de vague and La Salle des profs, released at the same time.
Two films which were more successful in theaters, but whose average rating is lower than that of Amal, always carried by the impeccable Lubna Azabal. Which is the fifth best film of 2024 according to you. And if you missed it in theaters, good news: it is visible on OCS (via myCANAL) until January 13.
* Ranking stopped on December 20, 2024 and established using an internal analytical tool based on the ratings of productions released in cinemas in 2024 and having at least 100 spectator ratings.
