Trailing until the 88th minute on the Lazio pitch, Atalanta snatched a draw at the last minute thanks to Brescianini. A valuable point which allows the Bergamasques to remain leaders of Serie A ahead of Inter Milan. But Naples, 3rd, has not said its last word…
This Saturday evening, Italian football fans had their eyes glued to the Olympic Stadium in Rome where a clash at the top was taking place between Lazio, 5th in the standings, and the surprising leader at the start of the season, Atalanta Bergamo. In an electric atmosphere, the two teams fought a fierce battle for 90 minutes, with a breathtaking outcome.
Lazio opens the score and thinks they can hold on to their victory
From the start of the match, Lazio showed its intentions with high pressing and direct forward play. This aggressive tactic paid off in the 27th minute. On a perfect service from Castellanos in the axis, Dele-Bashiru deceives the Bergamo porter and gives the advantage to the Romans. Lazio continues to push but cannot make a break before the break.
Atalanta unrecognizable in the first half
In front, Atalanta is unrecognizable. Far from her usual flamboyant game, the “Dea” suffers and hardly gets any opportunities. Gasperini’s men seem blunt and are struggling to develop their game. At half-time, the conclusion is clear: Lazio logically leads the score.
The awakening of the Bergamasques in the second half
After the break, Atalanta showed a completely different face. More enterprising, the Lombard formation monopolizes the ball and gradually puts pressure on the Roman defense. The opportunities multiply but Provedel, the Laziale goalkeeper, repels the opposing attacks. When suddenly, in the 88th minute, on yet another corner, the substitute Brescianini emerges at the far post and catapults the ball into the back of the net. 1-1, Atalanta snatches a draw at the last minute!
We suffered in the first half, we played much better after the break to finish 2024 well, the best in our history. It will be difficult to do better in 2025.
Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta manager
A valuable point in the title race
Despite this draw, Atalanta remains at the top of the standings with 41 pointsone more than Inter Milan, its runner-up. But the threat to Naples, 3rd at 3 points, is becoming more and more pressing. The Neapolitan club can also seize the leadership chair alone in the event of success against Venice on Sunday. The race for the Scudetto is more undecided than ever!
Next important step for the leaders: the semi-final of the Italian Super Cup on January 2 against… Inter Milan. A clash at the top between the first two in Serie A which could have repercussions on the rest of the season. A meeting not to be missed under any circumstances!
