The price per kilowatt hour will fall, but taxes will increase from February 1.
The price shield for electricity will end on February 1, 2025 but without the increase in the tax initially planned by the government, we learn in a decree published this Saturday, December 28. The regulated rate will therefore drop by 14%, but the bill will drop by 10% due to taxes.
According to the decree, the excise tax will automatically rise on February 1 to reach its pre-crisis level. It will cost 33.70 euros per megawatt hour for individuals compared to 22 currently.
What types of contracts are affected by the drop in electricity?
Although many electricity offers exist, the one which will be affected by the greatest reduction is that which concerns contracts at the regulated electricity sales rate. This concerns in particular EDF’s “Blue Tariff”. In total, 20 million French people will be winners.
How do I know on my bill if I am affected by the announced reduction?
Between the market offers which will fall, the fixed prices, the different operators etc., it is difficult to find your way and, above all, to know if you are concerned. However, it is very simple to find the answer to this question. For an Engie customer, all you have to do is take their last electricity bill. On the penultimate page, after the box “Payment by TIP S€PA”, a section concerns “Your energy contract with Engie”. There it indicates the name of your electricity contract with, in parentheses, what it refers to. The people who will benefit from the 14% price reduction are those who have the words “market price” written next to the name of their contract.

11/29/24 – 3:19 p.m. – Why it is wrong to say that the electricity tax will not increase
“I have decided not to increase taxes on electricity in the 2025 finance bill”: this is the announcement made Thursday by Michel Barnier. However, the communication made by the Prime Minister is a little rapid. In reality, it was expected that, on January 31, 2025, the TICFE (formerly CSPE) would return to its pre-energy crisis level, i.e. €0.032/kWh. This was written into law by Bruno Le Maire. Michel Barnier planned to go beyond this level. Ultimately, he gave up on raising the tax more than expected. However, he did not cancel the increase already scheduled.
