The surge in energy prices
Between Christmas and the New Year, some very bad news has just been announced: VAT on gas boilers, currently set at 5.5%, will reach 10% from January 1, 2025. This risks shake up an entire sector, as shown in the TF1 news video at the top of this article.
An “impossible” deadline to meet?
Antony Hadjipanayotou, a heating engineer in the Paris region, believes that this will cause the price of these devices to jump: “On a boiler costing 5,000 euros, that will be 200 to 300 euros more.” The business manager fears a drop in activity for craftsmen. “The only boilers that we are going to change are those that are dead, that we can no longer repair. But otherwise, for investments and energy savings, people are not going to make the decision”testifies the professional at the microphone of TF1.
The decree, the transposition of a European directive, only appeared in France on Tuesday, December 24 in the Official Journal. But he specifies that there is still time to benefit from a reduced VAT rate: “For operations having been the subject of a dated estimate, accepted by both parties and having given rise to a deposit collected before January 1, 2025, the VAT rate of 5.5% remains applicable.”
But according to Antony Hadjipanayotou, these conditions are in reality very complicated to respect. “Before the 31st, it’s almost impossible. The decree was signed on the evening of the 24th on the sly, without warning anyone. On Thursday the 26th and Friday the 27th, many went on vacation. We will have the 30th-31st left to have quotes and deposits signed, which is almost impossible for us”he castigates. For its part, the sector union (Synasav) mentions in a press release a “abrupt regulatory notch imposed on the profession”.

However, this measure will only apply to the equipment and installation of new gas boilers, called “very high energy performance (THPE)”. The old rate will remain in effect for the maintenance and repair of all those already installed in private homes. The 2025 draft budget of Michel Barnier’s government, not adopted due to censorship, provided for a VAT of 20% for all boilers.
