Iga Świątek speaks out on her appeal regarding the doping case
As part of her return to the circuit, world number two, Iga Świątek, seems determined to put the scandal linked to her doping affair behind her. She expressed that there was no valid reason for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to appeal her situation.
The five-time Grand Slam champion, who is set to compete in the United Cup after serving a month’s suspension in November following a positive test for trimetazidine – a banned substance – has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). She admitted that her positive test was the result of contamination of her drug melatonin, manufactured and sold in Poland.
Świątek first publicly commented on the matter during a press conference ahead of the United Cup matches in Sydney. She revealed confidence in the thoroughness of the investigation by ITIA and said the appeal by WADA was not justified.
“I think there is no reason, because I didn’t play three tournaments, I was suspended for a long time and I lost my number one place because of that,” he said. she confided. She also expressed surprise at the public support she received during her ordeal, indicating that she feared being abandoned after her case was announced.
The Polish team will begin their United Cup campaign on December 30 against Norway, with Świątek facing Malene Helgø at Ken Rosewall Arena, before the men’s singles and mixed doubles matches.
