Matteo Salvini acquitted today in the Open Arms trial. The sentence issued in Palermo is greeted with satisfaction by government allies. Messages of congratulations and closeness arrive to the leader of the League and Minister of Infrastructure.
“Great satisfaction for the acquittal of the vice president and minister Matteo Salvini in the Open Arms trial. A judgment that demonstrates how unfounded and surreal the accusations made against him were“, says the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. “Defending the Italian borders can never be a crime. Matteo Salvini's acquittal is great news. Let us continue together, with tenacity and determination, to fight illegal immigration, human trafficking and defend national sovereignty. Hurray!”, the prime minister writes on X.
“There is a judge in Palermo! A hug to Matteo Salvini”, writes the vice prime minister and foreign minister on Antonio Tajani.
“I am infinitely happy for Matteo Salvini. But above all, as a citizen and as a minister, I underline the importance of this sentence which reaffirms a very important principle: the political line of a government cannot be put on trial. This was what was being talked about in Palermo “, says the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi. “And the truth is that the strategy against irregular immigration implemented by the then Interior Minister Matteo Salvini coherently represented the political line of the Conte 1 Government, collegially pursued by the executive with the support of the parliamentary majority. The magistrates have evidently reaffirmed this principle which is fundamental to ensure a correct relationship between the powers of the State”, he adds.
“Honor to these courageous magistrates. This trial should not even have started, as I wrote years ago, as a columnist”, says the Minister of Justice in a note, Carlo Nordio.
“However, the political decision to authorize this trial was serious, in contrast with the constitutional law that protects the ministerial office – continues Nordio – Trials like this, based on nothing, slow down the administration of justice and waste resources. After the agony of the State-mafia trial and this acquittal, I believe a reflection on our imperfect system is necessary”, he adds.
“It's a great day for Italy. There is a 'judge' in Palermo,” he writes on Facebook Giuseppe ValditaraMinister of Education and Merit.
The tweet also arrives premier ungherese Viktor Orban: “Justice has prevailed! Well done Matteo Salvini! Another victory for the Patriots”. There is also the message from Elon Musk. The tycoon, owner of X, comments with a peremptory “Bravo!” the news of the acquittal.
“I was right and those who rejected my report as President of the Elections and Parliamentary Immunities Committee of the Senate, who had evaluated the behavior of the then Interior Minister Salvini, defining it as totally legitimate and compliant with the Constitution and the role of the Minister of the Interior at the time. They voted against those of the Democratic Party and the Grillini only out of political prejudice and not evaluating the facts”, says the leader of Forza Italia in the Senate, Maurizio Gasparri.
“Unfortunately – warns Gasparri – the political use of justice has seen parliament as the protagonist with an attitude of prevarication by the left, who rejected my work in the council and then took an abnormal, illegal and unconstitutional decision in the Chamber. I express satisfaction for the Salvini's acquittal, which I had already proposed in parliament. And I embrace the then Interior Minister Salvini. I was right and my fellow senators who voted against my proposal they carried out a biased political action against the truth and the Constitution. These people should be ashamed, but I would not accept the apologies of people who confused their painful condition with the truth of the law. I was right and I will say it in all places. Shame on those who blamed me, violating every norm and every rule.”
