FIFA, historic agreement with Netflix: rights to the Women’s World Cup purchased for the United States

The streaming giant Netflix has decided to enter the world of football in a major way. As announced in a press release, a historic agreement was reached with FIFA for the exclusive rights for the United States of America for the 2027 and 2031 editions of the Women’s World Cup. This tournament will therefore be the first competition to be purchased entirely by Netflix and will allow US fans unprecedented access to every match and coverage of the event which will also feature a studio with top-level commentators and international football stars. The deal also includes Puerto Rico and will have dual broadcasts in English and Spanish.

“This is a landmark moment for sports media rights. As a major brand and new long-term partner of FIFA, Netflix has demonstrated a very strong level of commitment to the growth of women’s football. – said the FIFA President Gianni Infantino – This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game. The collaboration between FIFA and Netflix makes this a truly historic day for television broadcasts and for women’s football. As well as broadcasting the tournaments themselves, Netflix will play a key role in bringing the appeal of women’s football to multi-million dollar audiences in the run-up to both final tournaments, allowing us to further increase their appeal.”

“I have seen the FIFA Women’s World Cup fandom grow enormously, from the electrifying atmosphere in in 2019 to, more recently, the incredible energy we saw in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand last year. – said the Head of Content at Netflix White Market – Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix isn’t just about streaming the matches, it’s about celebrating the players, culture and passion that drive the global rise of women’s sport.”
