*PRESS RELEASE*
*NAPLES MILLIONAIRE!*
*THE GREAT CLASSIC BY EDUARDO DE FILIPPO IN THE COMPANY’S RE-READING
“LE QUINTE” DIRECTED BY DIRECTOR PASQUALE NESSA*
*On stage on December 23rd on the stage of the Teatro Nuovo*
*«A few weeks after the liberation I looked out on my balcony
house in Parco Grifeo, and took a look at the panorama of this city
tortured: then the play came to me in embryo and I wrote it
all in one breath, like a long article on war and its harmful effects
consequences.” Edward Of Philip*
*«**’The war is not over» – «The night has to pass»*
*Returns* “*Napoli milionaria!*” one of the *masterpieces of the dramaturgy of
Eduardo De Filippo* and *comes back to life on the stage of the Teatro Nuovo in Martina
Franca, next December 23rd*, thanks to the Company’s *rereading
“Le Quinte”* *directed by director Pasquale Nessa.*
A *classic* that *reproposes* itself in all its relevance and with force,
intact and essential, of his pacifist message* in a *period
historical, the current one, in which the war scenarios unfortunately remain one
dramatic and close reality*.
First work of the collection “*Cantata dei giorni dispari*”, the drama “*Napoli
millionaire!*” was written by Eduardo in a few weeks *in 1945* and debuted
on March 15 of that same year at the *Teatro di San Carlo in Naples*. As
all of Eduardo’s comedies, this too was performed in many countries
Europeans and also became a *lyrical drama in three acts*, with a libretto by
Eduardo De Filippo and music by *Nino Rota*, which debuted on 22 June 1977
at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. His are also significant
*transpositions
cinematographic*, including the 1950 one directed by the same
Eduardo, who also took care of the screenplay and cast.
*The story*
We are in 1942, at the end of the second year of the war, in Naples, in southern Italy
like many others, it overlooks an alley where the family lives
unemployed tram driver Gennaro Jovine. The family survives through trafficking
crimes organized by his wife Amalia in cahoots with Errico
Settebellizze, in love with her, and together with her eldest children, Amedeo and
Maria Rosaria. With the Allied landing everything changes. The bass is no more
dirty and messy, but refurbished. Here comes peace, abundance
of American goods and money. Gennaro, captured by the Germans in
withdrawn, has now disappeared from the life of the woman who remains dazzled by
all that wealth at your fingertips. When he unexpectedly returns,
his family is dissolved and “lost”. Amalia is a rich woman in
society with Seven Beauties and treats those who belong to it with ruthless cruelty
turn to purchase basic necessities. Amedeo, the oldest son
great became a tire thief, Maria Rosaria the eldest daughter
she is pregnant by an American soldier who then abandoned her. Will be
the sudden illness of Rituccia, the youngest daughter, to force
all coming to terms with what they have become. Only Gennaro will try to
reconstruct the honest identity of his family by opening his eyes
to Amalia to look at the hell she fell into. It will be a journey
long and uncertain because, as he repeated, unheard since the day of his
Gennaro returns, the war is not over yet. “*He’s going to have a good night’s sleep*”.
“*The decision to stage a great, timeless classic such as
“Naples Millionaire!” – *highlights *Pasquale Nessa* in his *director’s notes
– arises from the desire to propose a profound reflection on what
it is happening around us today. A scenario of war and violence
alarming, worrying and very close, which cannot leave us indifferent
in front of a television screen. That’s why today is more than ever
important to pay attention to a precious, essential text,
like the one written by Eduardo almost 80 years ago but still, unfortunately,
absolutely current. A text in which the great Master with his
wisdom, its simple language, accessible to all, gives us gods
important suggestions on how to react and try, each in their own small way,
to direct their actions towards good ends. And the teaching comes
precisely from poverty, which remains the common denominator with the other
essential text from Eduardo’s theatre, “Natale in casa Cupiello”, from
we staged last year. A poverty full of values:
the importance of the union of the family, understood not only as a nucleus
familiar but as a community, honesty, altruism. Values that should
represent our true identity matrix. And here it is
because, after many years, Eduardo’s theater remains an example
follow”.*
