(ANSA-AFP) – PARIS, DECEMBER 19 – It’s official: New Zealander Liam Lawson will join multiple world champion Max Verstappen as a Red Bull driver in the next F1 World Championship. The announcement from team principal Christian Horner comes 24 hours after the farewell of the Mexican Sergio Perez, until now the team’s second driver.
The 22-year-old Lawson was part of the ‘Red Bull Junior’ program for five years, then was part of the ‘sister’ team Racing Bulls with which he placed three times among the top ten in F1 grands prix, a category in which he made his debut in the Dutch GP last year.
“For me, this announcement is the realization of a dream – his first words as a Red Bull driver – that I have cultivated since I was eight years old. I can’t wait to get started: it will be wonderful to work alongside Max Verstappen and learn from a champion like him. I am sure that his experience will be invaluable for me too.”
Horner, however, was keen to underline that the choice fell on Lawson because “his performances with Racing Bulls have shown that not only is he capable of providing excellent results, but that he is also a real driver, who is not afraid to fight with the best and come out on top.” (ANSA-AFP).
