Ukraine is one of only five countries with such technology.
Ukrainian Defense Forces use laser weapons to shoot down aerial targets. This was announced by Vadym Sukharevskyi, commander of the Ukrainian unmanned systems forces, quoted by the Ukrainian News Agency Interfax-Ukraine.
“We can say that today Ukraine is, if I am not mistaken, the fifth country that can say that it has a laser. Today, we can shoot down planes at an altitude of more than 2 km with this laser”he explained.
“Trident”
According to the Ukrainian military official, the weapon is called “Tryzub” (“Trident“, in French) and work is underway to scale it and increase its power. The trident is a symbol used on the Ukrainian coat of arms, suggesting that the weapon was manufactured in the country.
To date, only a few powers have declared the existence of operational laser weapons: Russia, Israel, the United States and China. Germany, France and Great Britain, as well as Turkey, are actively developing them.
