In a significant step towards strengthening its defense capabilities, Taiwan received the first shipment of 38 M1A2T Abrams main battle tanks of the United States, part of a broader $2 billion arms deal approved in 2019. The arrival marks a new chapter in the modernization of Taiwan’s armored forces amid rising tensions with the China.


Delivery Details

  • Arrival : A specialized transport ship carrying the tanks docked at Taipei Port on Sunday, as reported by Liberty Times.
  • Next Steps: The tanks will be transported by truck to Department of Army Installation and Training in Hukou, Hsinchu, about 84 kilometers (52 miles) from Taipei. Staff training should begin after Spring Festival the January 29, 2025.
  • Future Shipments: This is the first batch of a planned total of 108 M1A2T tankswith a second batch of 42 chars and a third batch of 28 chars expected from here 2026.

Upgrading Taiwan’s Armored Fleet

The introduction of tanks M1A2T Abrams represents a major improvement for Taiwan’s aging armored fleet, which currently includes:

  • 460 tanks M60A3 : Originally incorporated in 1959, these tanks have been in service for a long time and are considered obsolete by modern standards.
  • 450 tanks CM11 : A hybrid tank developed in the 1990s, combining the M60 chassis, the M48 Patton turret and the M1 Abrams fire control system. The CM11 tanks are operational with the 584e Brigade and must be gradually replaced by the new Abrams tanks.

The M1A2T Abrams—a customized version of the U.S. Army’s Abrams tank—is equipped with advanced armor, a powerful 120mm smoothbore cannon, and cutting-edge electronics to improve performance on the battlefield.


The arrival of the Abrams tanks adds to a series of recent military acquisitions by Taiwan aimed at countering the growing military threat from China:

  1. Missile systems:
    • Delivery of MGM-140 tactical missile systems (ATACMS) and of High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) from the United States.
    • Induction of Harpoon anti-ship missile systems in October.
  2. Drones and air defense:
    • Purchase agreement for 1,000 attack drones United States in November.
    • Approval of National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and advanced long-range radars (AN/TPS-77 et AN/TPS-78), worth $1.94 billion.
