Israel announced on Sunday December 15 the closure of its embassy in Dublin. The government of Benjamin Netanyahu criticizes the Republic for having, with Spain and Norway, recognized the State of Palestine in May, but also for having associated itself, on December 11, with the complaint filed by Africa of the South to the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of violating, in its offensive in Gaza, the UN convention for the prevention and repression of genocides. “The decision to close the Israeli embassy in Dublin was taken in light of extreme anti-Israel politics” of the country, said in a press release sent to the Irish Times the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland) Simon Harris described « regrettable » the Israeli decision, denying that its center-right government had implemented policies “anti-Israel” et stating that his position was to defend “peace, human rights and respect for international law”. On December 11, his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Michael Martin, insisted on the “collective punishment” inflicted on the Palestinian people because of the Israeli military intervention launched in October 2023 against the Gaza Strip, to justify Ireland's decision to join the South African complaint to the International Court of Justice.
