The fire is now extinguished and there are no injuries to report, but the building is out of use, fire department spokesperson Walter Derieuw confirmed to Belga.
Brussels firefighters intervened during the night from Sunday to Monday for a fire in a shisha bar on the Chaussée de Mons in Anderlecht.
Firefighters were called shortly before 2 a.m. to a two-story building on fire. A fire broke out in a hookah bar located on the ground floor. Customers had already evacuated the premises. The flames probably spread via the gas evacuation duct, which overheated and set fire to the apartment located upstairs, which was uninhabited, detailed Walter Derieuw. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes. “The building is uninhabitable and the shisha bar is out of order”according to the spokesperson.
Firefighters left the scene shortly before 5 a.m., but they will return in the morning to check that the ventilation worked as it should, he said. The firefighters also noted excessively high levels of CO2, which suggests that there was also a prior ventilation problem in this establishment to evacuate combustion gases.
