Taiwan has taken a major step in modernizing its military capabilities by receiving 38 M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks delivered by the United States. This delivery marks the first receipt of new tanks by Taipei since 30 ansaccording to the press agency Central News Agency.
These armored vehicles are part of an order placed in 2019 for a total of 108 unitsrepresenting an investment of $1.2 billion. The rest of the tanks will be delivered from here 2025 et 2026in accordance with the schedule agreed between the two partners. The new Abrams were transferred to a army training base in Hsinchulocated south of the capital Taipei.
Necessary modernization in the face of aging equipment
The Taiwanese army currently has 1000 charsmainly American designed models like the M60A3 or even locally produced vehicles like the CM Brave Tiger. However, the technology of these models tends to become obsolete in the face of recent military advances.
The arrival of the Abrams tanks constitutes a direct response to security challenges posed by a possible Chinese attack. These new armored vehicles, known for their advanced technology and their intervention capacity, offer Taipei increased defense capabilities.
Washington, a strategic ally for Taiwan
This delivery confirms the role of UNITED STATES as a major ally and leading arms supplier from Taiwan. This military cooperation continues to arouse anger of Beijingwhich claims the island as an integral part of its territory since 1949.
Last November, Taiwan had already received a first batch of HIMARS multiple rocket launchers Americans, equipment also used by Ukraine in its conflict against Russia. This dynamic is part of a clear United States policy aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s defensive capabilities in the face of growing threats of China.
A record defense budget for Taiwan
To face this military pressure, Taiwan allocated a record budget of 19 billion dollars for his defense in 2024a figure that is constantly increasing. The budget planned for 2025 should reach a new picdemonstrating Taipei’s determination to strengthen its national security.
For several decades, the United States has provided Taiwan with advanced military equipment, including F-16 fighter jets and warships. However, their policy remains marked by a strategic ambiguitythe United States not specifying whether a military intervention would be triggered in the event of a Chinese attack.
Increased tensions with China
China considers this delivery as a direct provocationnot excluding the use of force to regain control of the island. This situation reinforces the geopolitical tensions already present in the Indo-Pacific region.
Faced with these threats, Taiwan is pursuing its strategy of military modernizationrelying on solid alliances to ensure its sovereignty and its safety. The arrival of chars Abrams represents a strong signal of its preparation in the face of an increasingly uncertain regional environment.
