Release by Textual Editions of The Odyssey of the Small Italian Islands by Bernard Plossu as well as an exhibition at the gallery of the day agnès b. until December 22nd, 2024.
Accompanied by the photographer Françoise Nuñez and their son Joaquim, Bernard Plossu left for Stromboli in 1987. This trip marked the starting point of a vast photographic odyssey: for thirty years, he traveled the small Italian islands, after summer. If their sumptuous landscapes carry within them the serious aesthetic of neorealist films of the 1950s, they at the same time sow a great wind of freedom in the heart of those who contemplate them. Known for rehabilitating lights that other photographers are wary of, Plossu’s images magnify simple moments saturated by the poetry of the day, faithful translations of a sensitive experience fully and intimately lived.
An ode full of grace and delicacy addressed to the wild beauty of Italy, this odyssey is also a love declaration to Françoise.
