Gaza: Al Jazeera channel denounces the “targeted killing” of one of its journalists during an Israeli strike

His name is added to the list of journalists killed in Gaza. The Qatari channel Al Jazeera announced on Sunday that one of its journalists had been killed in an Israeli strike on the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army is at war against the Hamas terrorist movement.

“Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed al-Louh was killed today, Sunday, in an Israeli bombardment,” the channel said, adding that the strike had targeted the Nusseirat refugee camp, in the center of the besieged territory. .

Al Jazeera “condemns in the strongest terms the assassination of its cameraman, Ahmed Baker Al-Louh, 39, by Israeli occupying forces. He was brutally killed during an airstrike that targeted a Civil Defense post in the market area of Al-Nusseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip,” the channel said.

The spokesperson for the Gaza Civil Defense, Mahmoud Bassal, confirmed to AFP the death of the journalist during this strike, which also cost the lives of three Civil Defense rescuers, according to him. He added that a military plane had “targeted the Civil Defense site in the Nusseirat camp.” Contacted by AFP, the Israeli army said it was examining this information.

Ahmed al-Louh, 39, is the fifth Al Jazeera journalist killed since the start of the war in Gaza, triggered on October 7, 2023 by the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian terrorist movement Hamas on Israeli territory.

In its latest report, Reporter Sans Frontières (RSF) listed 54 journalists killed in the exercise of their duty in 2024, including sixteen in Gaza. The organization also specified that in total, “more than 145 journalists” had been killed by the Israeli army since October 2023 in Gaza, including “at least 35 in the exercise of their duties”.

Israeli authorities have repeatedly accused Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza of being “terrorist agents”, allegations constantly rejected by the channel, which accuses Israel of systematically targeting its reporters in the besieged territory. The channel has also been banned since May from operating and broadcasting in Israel, and its local office was bombed.
