Once is not customary, 2K marks the end of a very popular game by announcing the permanent closure of its servers. There’s not much time left to enjoy it.
The end of 2024 promises to be difficult for 2K fans. On December 31, the online servers of a popular game will shut down permanently. An announcement which, although predictable, remains a hard blow for players who still appreciate this title released in 2022.
This 2K game is stopping
So NBA 2k23 closes its doors. With this closure, several online features and game modes will become inaccessible. So now is the perfect time to enjoy it one last time before everything disappears. NBA 2K23’s server shutdown follows a well-known trend in sports games. Two years after the release of a title, publishers often judge that the majority of players have migrated to more recent versions, making maintaining servers less profitable. Additionally, licensing constraints could also justify this decision.
Despite everything, for players who continue to invest in the game, this cut remains frustrating. Some did not have time to complete their objectives or take full advantage of the online modes, especially those who purchased the game late.
What consequences for players?
Once the servers are shut down, NBA 2K23’s online features will be unusable. This includes popular modes like MyTeam and the ability to unlock certain achievements or trophies that require a connection. Clearly, entire sections of the game will become obsolete.
Players will still be able to enjoy offline modes, but the overall experience will be significantly reduced. For fans of the franchise, this closure is a reminder of the short life cycle of modern sports games.
NBA 2K23 is not an isolated case. Sports games, whether it’s NBA 2K, FIFAor even WWE 2K, regularly face this problem. For example, servers WWE 2K23 will also close in early 2025, just days after NBA 2K23.
