An American father faked his death to flee his family and join a woman he met online. After 54 days of disappearance, he surrendered to the authorities, while his wife initiated divorce proceedings.

Caught up with reality. Ryan Borgwardt, an American father of three, faked his death last August after kayaking on Green Lake, Wisconsin, to abandon his family and join a woman he had met online in Uzbekistan, reports the Daily Mail.

Significant resources mobilized to find his body

Initially presumed to have drowned, significant resources were mobilized to find his body. In November, Ryan began cooperating with authorities, confirming that he was alive but not revealing his exact location.

On the 54th day after his disappearance, he finally turned himself in to authorities and was charged with misdemeanor obstruction. The latter was immediately presented to a court. At the same time, his wife, Emily, filed for divorce, saying their marriage was “irreparably broken.” She demands sole custody of their three children as well as a separation of property.
