FC Ajax Amsterdam has launched a crowdfunding initiative to help former player Tijjani Babangida following a tragic car accident which claimed the lives of his family.

On May 9, Babangida, who spent an impressive seven years with Ajax, was involved in a tragic collision on the Kaduna-Zaria highway. At the time of the accident, he was traveling with his younger brother Ibrahim, his wife, their one-year-old son Fadil and a family aide.

Reports indicate that Ibrahim lost his life instantly in the accident, while young Fadil succumbed to his injuries a few days later. Babangida’s wife suffered serious injuries, resulting in the loss of an eye and requiring facial reconstruction surgery, while the aide suffered a broken leg.

Following this catastrophic event, Babangida, along with his wife, moved to the Netherlands, where she is receiving medical treatment.

In a documentary released on Thursday, Ajax shared that Babangida was overwhelmed by the kindness of his “many good football friends”, who took the initiative to launch this crowdfunding campaign.

“Six months ago, Tijjani Babangida’s life was turned upside down. In a horrific car accident, he lost his one-and-a-half-year-old son and his younger brother, while his wife suffered serious injuries,” said the legend of the documentary.

“Affectionately nicknamed ‘Baba’, he can count on the support of many friends in the world of sport. They are mobilizing to assist him in this difficult period and have initiated a crowdfunding effort to ease his journey through this trauma.”

Babangida, who played for Ajax for seven successful years, was part of the team that won the Eredivisie title in 1998, as well as two Dutch Cup trophies, scoring an impressive total of 20 goals in 77 appearances.
