Paris and the whole world are preparing for a unprecedented event in history: the reopening of the renovated Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, five years after its fire. Among the prestigious guests who have confirmed their presence at the celebrations starting this Saturday, December 7, 2024, Donald Trump, who will make his first trip since his re-election to the American presidential race.

A rapid response from Civil Security

“I have the honor to announce that I will travel to Paris, on Saturday to witness the reopening of the magnificent and historic Notre-Dame Cathedral, which has been completely restored,” said the Republican on his Truth Social network earlier this week. A masterpiece of 12th century Gothic art which could have definitively disappeared if its idea drawn on the evening of the fire had been applied.

On April 15, 2019, Donald Trump, then president, suggested that water bombers take action to put out the fire. “It is so terrible to witness this gigantic fire at Notre-Dame de Paris. Maybe we should use water bombers to put it out. We must act quickly,” he reacted on Twitter.

Barely an hour later, Civil Security responded, indicating that “dropping water by plane on this type of building could lead to the collapse of the entire structure.”

And to continue: “Helicopter or plane, the weight of the water and the intensity of the drop at low altitude could indeed weaken the structure of Notre-Dame and cause collateral damage to the surrounding buildings. »

On site, 400 firefighters were mobilized to save the building.

The American president's tweet did not fail to spark an outcry on social networks. “Let's blindly drop tons of water from a height of 100 meters on an inhabited area,” quipped a French Internet user, spotted by 20 Minutes.
